Excavation to seek answers about Silverdale's iconic chimney

The Bay's very own Indiana Jones' and Lara Crofts are gathering in Silverdale over the next two weeks, brushing off their trowels and donning their stripy jumpers... in the hope of uncovering secret stones and forgotten fragments, hidden beneath the saltmarsh at the iconic site of Jenny Brown's Point.

Local enthusiasts of all things old and muddy are joining Morecambe Bay Partnership and professional archaeologists to excavate three trenches near to the site of the iconic chimney located on the shore near to Jenny Brown's Point - a well known landmark of Morecambe Bay.

Let’s set the scene.

It’s a beautiful, crisp, autumnal afternoon and you’re taking a stroll down a beautiful country lane or along one of our stunning beaches along the north west coast. Perhaps you’re joined by man’s best friend, or maybe, some spooky trick-or-treaters.

Then you see it - a little black bag.

It might be hung on a branch, half buried in the sand or just lying on the ground. Unfortunately it’s not filled with delicious Halloween treats, rather its full of something a little more… foul!

Saved! Furness ancient monuments removed from Historic England’s Heritage at Risk register

This year’s ‘At Risk’ register reveals good news for Morecambe Bay’s iconic stone circle.

Three local scheduled ancient monuments, on Birkrigg Common, Ulverston, which had previously been deemed to have been ‘at risk’ by Historic England, have been saved, thanks to the work of dedicated Morecambe Bay Partnership volunteers and volunteers from Ulverston’s Branch of Cumbria Wildlife Trust.
