Soak up the sights, smells and sounds of the Bay on two wheels

Launched in June 2015, the Bay Cycle Way connects Walney near Barrow to Glasson south of Lancaster, highlighting great viewpoints and sights and offering relaxed and inspiring cycling along quiet country lanes, canal tow paths and smooth promenades.  Since it was launched in 2015 it has been bringing new visitors to explore quiet villages, historic sites and stunning viewpoints.

The Bay Cycle Way was developed in close partnership with Sustrans, a leading UK charity enabling people to travel by foot, bike or public transport for more of the journeys we make every day and the route is part of Sustrans' National Cycle Network (NCN 700). Morecambe Bay Partnership and Sustrans also worked closely with Cumbria County Council and Lancashire County Council to make the scheme happen.

The creation of the Bay Cycle Way was inspired by Morecambe Bay Partnership's vision for accessing the stunning heritage, coastline, villages and towns around Morecambe Bay, in a family-friendly, accessible and sustainable way, that would inspire local communities and visitors to explore the area, support local businesses and spread the word about what a fabulous place the Bay is to live, visit and explore. It is a constantly evolving tourism experience, with  an electric bike network planned as covid restrictions ease, making the route and the Bay even more accessible for everyone, no matter what their age, level of fitness, or confidence.

Currently you can hire an e-bike at Witherslack Cycle Barn.

The route was funded by the Coastal Communities Fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund.
