Ørsted latest round of grants to help protect the Bay's birds

Morecambe Bay Partnership is thrilled to be awarded a grant from Walney Extension Community Fund, which will enable us to do more for the Bay's amazing birds.

Morecambe Bay is in the UK's top 3 places for birds. Despite this, birds are seriously threatened, with numbers plummeting by 50% for many priority species. With this funding we will support communities to become Natural Ambassadors so they can protect oystercatchers, curlews, dunlin, knot and other birds at every day places around the Bay, making sure that their evocative calls continue be heard by all.

The Fund is made possible by Ørsted (formerly DONG Energy) which has constructed the world’s largest offshore wind farm, Walney Extension, off the Walney Island coast in Cumbria. Each year, approximately £600,000 will be made available for community projects for the expected 25-year lifetime of the wind farm.

This funding allows us to continue to support and develop our 'Natural Ambassadors' programme, which has been running since 2017. This sees dedicated volunteers brave the wet and wild weather of Morecambe Bay during the winter months, armed with binoculars, telescopes and good humour, to show walkers, dog walkers and other recreational users of the Bay's shoreline, the important high-tide roosts that support thousands of over-wintering visiting birds to the Bay and explain to them how they can avoid disturbing the birds, whilst still enjoying the Bay and its birds.

If you are interested in becoming a Natural Ambassador volunteer, please contact us or sign up to recieve our newsletter, where you can find out more about opportunities we are offering.
