Understanding the Bay: Become a History Detective - Glasson and Cockerham CANCELLED

We’re looking for volunteers to help us research some of the Bay’s most intriguing historic sites. If you’re keen to help out, please sign up for these training courses, which will give you the basic skills that you need to help on our project.

What: Documentary research workshops for volunteers - Understanding the Bay - Your Heritage!

When: Saturday 28 May and Saturday 4 June 2016 10am-4pm

Where: Thurnam Village Hall, nr Glasson, Lancaster

Join us to to help investigate and collect historical and archaeological information about sites around Morecambe Bay.

We are looking for volunteers to help investigate the archaeological landscape and historical background to the maritime sites and WWII military sites of this area  We'll provide you with the skills required to access archaeological/historical records and documentary evidence during these 2 training days in May and June. Once you're fully trained, we hope that you will carry on and help us to research the sites, with support from our training team. This will include further research and drop in sessions during Spring/Summer 2016. 

The training workshops are FREE for volunteers, although we do ask that you give us a few more ours of hours of your voluntary time to help with the research for this project (approximately 5-10 hours in addition to the workshops). 

Training will cover:

  • Basic research skills and sources of information
  • Historic mapping/place names
  • Aerial photography
  • Landscape assessment (through site visits)
  • Report writing and archiving

Access: Please note that the session on Saturday 28 May includes an optional afternoon site visit.
