Understanding the Bay: Geophysical survey training, Jenny Brown's Point

A rare opportunity for participants to learn the skills and 'have a go' at using the techniques used by archaeologists to 'see beneath the soil'.

What: Archaeological geophysical survey training

When: Tuesday 24 May 7.30pm-9pm and Wed 25 - Thurs 26 May 10am-4pm. Optional Friday 27 May 10-12 noon.

Where: Jenny Brown's Point, Silverdale

Cost: £5, no experience required (FREE for existing H2H volunteers).

Join us to to help survey and investigate the intriguing historic site of Jenny Brown's Point, Silverdale.

The training course programme is as follows:

  • Tuesday 24th May: 7.30-9.00pm Introductory workshop on the techniques and their application to archaeological research (Britannia Room, Silverdale Hotel)
  • Wednesday 25th May to Thursday 26th May 10.00am-16.00pm: On site survey. Participants will get to have a go at each of the survey techniques over the two days.
  • Friday 27th May 10.00am-12.00pm Optional morning workshop introducing processing of data collected and summary of results (Britannia Room, Silverdale Hotel) 

 A certain level of agility is required as there is a walk from the site and the survey work will require using and manoeuvering survey kit.

Please ensure that you can attend the full course - including 1 x introductory evening session and two full days of on-site survey - this is a popular course, so please only book a place if you intend to attend the full course. The data processing/summary on Friday 27th (morning) is optional.     

The training will be provided by professional archaeologists based at Archaeological Services-Durham University.
