Understanding the Bay: Documentary Research Training

Training courses on various dates in Kendal, Arnside and Barrow

Cost: FREE

Join us as a volunteer to help investigate and collect historical and archaeological information about sites around Morecambe Bay.

Over a series of two full day or three half-day workshops, learn the skills required to access archaeological and historical records and documentary evidence of the Bay

Training outline as follows:

  • Basic research skills and sources of information
  • Historic mapping/place names
  • Aerial photography
  • Landscape assessment
  • Report writing and archiving

Site visit: Please note that the sessions may include optional site visits (to be arranged). Further details will be sent prior to the training.

Subsequent archive visits, research and drop in sessions will be arranged during Winter 2016-7 to support volunteers in researching local historic sites for this project. . 

We ask that volunteers attend all sessions and help to undertake additional research for the project once you have received the training (approximately 5-10 hours in addition to the workshops).

Trainers: The workshops will be hosted by Dr. Richard Newman and data collection/support overseen by Cat Peters of Wardell Armstrong Archaeology.

The courses run in Kendal, Arnside and Barrow on the following dates. Participants are expected to attend all sessions in a single location (ie all three sessions in Kendal or both sessions in either Arnside or Barrow). Booking is essential.

Kendal: Tue 20 Dec, 10 Jan, 17 Jan, 1-4pm each day. Find out more and book your place.
