Morecambe Bay's Tidal Islands : Guided walk to Piel Island

Meeting Point: Walney Island.  Full details of the meeting point will be sent out to those registered ahead of the walk.

Explore the history and landscape of  Piel Island and Castle with a light-hearted guided walk across the sands from Walney Island to Piel Island, led by expert guide John Murphy.

Once on Piel Island, John will talk about the island, its castle and share some of the stories of this magical place.

Following the site tour visitors may wish to take refreshments in the Ship Inn (or bring their own picnic) and explore the island themselves before being guided back across the sands by John Murphy.

The whole event will last around 4 hours depending on the pace of the participants and weather. Toilets and refreshments are available on Piel Island at the Ship Inn. All participants must return to the meeting point at the given time to return to be guided back to the island.

Please note that this walk will require a certain level of agility and may involve wading through some channels. Please bring plenty to drink and ensure that you wear appropriate weather proof clothing, sturdy walking shoes (plus sunscreen/hat if needed) and ensure the walk leader is aware of any medical conditions you may have on the day.

This event is suitable for children ages 6+.

PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE TO JOIN THE GUIDED WALKS ACROSS THE SANDS. THE WALK IS BEING LED BY AN EXPERT GUIDE WHO HAS ASSESSED THE TIDES/SAFE PASSAGE TO PIEL ISLAND. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD PARTICIPANTS ATTEMPT TO WALK ACROSS TO PIEL UNACCOMPANIED.

Cost: £8 for adults £3 for children (aged 6 and over). Pre-booking required. Tickets available from Eventbrite

All proceeds will go to the Morecambe Bay Partnership Charity and will play a vital role in helping to create a thriving Bay rich in wildlife and heritage that brings joy to all. Your gift will help save the Bay’s birds, clean up our beaches, improve disabled access and get more people caring for and celebrating the history that shaped us.
