An introduction to early modern palaeography

Unscramble the puzzles of old handwriting.

Venue: Arnside Educational Institute

Dr James Bowen from Lancaster University's Regional Heritage Centre will deliver a talk and workshop on how to read a range of historical documents for Cumbria and North Lancashire, developing your palaeography skills and exploring their wider context by relating them to themes of early modern history. Styles of handwriting and letter forms, spelling and punctuation, abbreviations and contractions, numerals, dates and transcription techniques will be covered.

The format of the morning will be:

  • 10-11am introductory talk

  • 11am-11.10am break

  • 11.15am-12.15pm practical workshop

  • 12.15pm-12.30pm any questions
