Free Artist Talk: Chris Drury

A talk by land artist Chris Drury who has created a new artwork for Sunderland Point

Fri 29 March, 7.30pm, Overton Memorial Hall

Chris Drury, a landscape artist with an international reputation, is creating a very special new artwork for Sunderland Point which will sit quietly on the west shore. This piece, Horizon Line Chamber, which will open to the public at the end of March, is a dry stone building featuring a camera obscura which throws an image of the horizon into the inside white-washed walls.

Having developed similar chambers around the UK and internationally, Sussex-based Drury responds to the place using naturally occurring materials and skills from the locations he works. At Sunderland Point, master craftsman dry stone waller, Andrew Mason, has been turning reclaimed stone into a beautiful chamber and inside an ever-changing, upside-down and divided circle of sea and sky will be projected onto a white lime-washed interior wall, as a lens built into the sea-facing wall turns this small oratory into a camera obscura.

In this special artists talk to celebrate the completion of Horizon Line Chamber, Chris will talk about his work on other chambers around the world and, particularly, the Horizon Line Chamber at Sunderland Point.

The development of Horizon Line Chamber, is the latest in the series of Morecambe Bay Partnership's Headlands to Headspace arts commissions in Morecambe Bay which included: a beautiful outdoor dance piece by AboutTime Dance Company, Longways / Crosswise in Silverdale; a series of storytelling walks by Emily Hennessey at Arnside Knott and Birkrigg Common; Settlement, an intriguing mirrored installation by Rob Mulholland at Heysham and Birkrigg Common and SHIP, a new sculpture by artist Anna Gillespie being created in Heysham.
