Deep Cabaret - Wanton Mischief: Songs inspired by the ecopsychology of the Bay (part of Festival of the Bay 2018)

Here's Morecambe Bay as you've never encountered her before. Discover music inspired by the extraordinary Bay landscape creating an experience that is fulsome and romantic one moment, edgy and disturbing the next

Part of Morecambe Bay Partnership's Festival of the Bay 2018

A show that starts with Deep Cabaret's music of riffs and drones; adds words sampled from historical accounts of shipwrecks and slave deaths, the names of cockle beds and the sands of the sea-bed; mashes them up with the work of poets and novelists who live in the area such as Sarah Hymas and Jenn Ashworth; all to create a set of songs that conjour the space and light of Morecambe Bay. Supported by a sequence of images produced by photographers and artists who love the place, Wanton Mischief becomes a homage to, and a wade through, the 'pickled juices of the peat' of the Bay.

Deep Cabaret are: Maja Bugge (cello), Steve Lewis (voice, guitar), Ben McCabe (drums, vocals), Matt Robinson (bass clarinet), Paul Sherwood (bagpipes, hurdy-gurdy), Jayson Stilwell (cyzyk overtoning, percussion). The performance will be 2 x 45min sets with a short interval. For a taster, here's Deep Cabaret performing 'Samboo' - Samboo sets a contemporaneous newspaper report of the death and burial of a black slave at Sunderland Point near Lancaster in 1822.

This performance in the beautiful setting of St Peter's Church, Heysham, is a 'Festival of the Bay 2018' special event celebrating the cultural and natural heritage of Morecambe Bay.

Tickets: £6 available via Eventbrite. Pre-booking required.

This event is supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund through Morecambe Bay Partnership's Headlands to Headspace Landscape Partnership Scheme and Jazz North
