Understanding the Bay: Coastal Archaeology and Palaeoenvironmental Training Day

Interested in coastal archaeology and the past environment? Want to know more about what may be found along the coastline and how it can be recorded and reported? Fancy helping build up a better understanding of Morecambe Bay's past?

Learn from expert who will share their experience of identifying, working on and recording coastal/palaeoenvironmental sites. Particpate in a series of workshops designed to build skills on artefact identification, site recognition/recording, and best practice for working on/reporting discoveries along the shore.

FREE one day training symposium, open to everyone, including volunteers, students, site rangers, site managers and professionals working in the heritage and ecology fields. Registration will be from 9.30am with the event starting at 10.00am.

Speakers include:

  • Alison Burns (PhD student University of Manchester): Footprints of the Past: Identification of footprints, approaches to their recording and the Palaeoecology of the area during the Holocene
  • Professor Martin Bell (University of Reading): Coastal research, fieldwork and investigations in the Seven Estuary
  • Oliver Hutchinson (Channel 4’s Britain at Low Tide and CITiZAN South East): Discovering Mersea through CITiZAN Science
  • Dr Sue Stallibrass (Historic England NW Science Advisor): If you go down to the shore today… evidence of animals that used to live in the landscape
  • Andy Sherman (CITiZAN North): Our submerged past – a history of submerged forests and the Citizan app.

Limited places are available and early booking is essential. Tea/coffee will be provided. Lunch may be purchased in the cafe within the event venue or from one of the town centre shops.

An optional site visit to Walney is being held on 31st May where participants will assist the team CITiZAN to record sites using the CITiZAN app. Book a FREE place by clicking here.
