Volunteer workparty: Bracken Clearance, Birkrigg Common (24 May)

Join us to help clear bracken from important scheduled ancient monuments on Birkrigg Common, near Ulverston.

What: Volunteer work party

When: Thursday 24th May

Where: Birkrigg Common, Bardsea, near Ulverston. Meet at Malt Kiln, Bardsea for tea/coffee and registration.

Cost: FREE

Booking: Please contact us if you are interested in joining us so that we can provide enough tools. 

Help us clear bracken from Birkrigg Common, to help protect and conserve the important archaeological monuments that are hidden beneath (bracken clearance subject to bird survey results).

  •  Full instructions, tools and all equipment will be provided.
  • From the Malt Kiln working parties will go out to site to undertake targeted clearance work. 
  • Minimum age 8 years old, but all children must be accompanied by an adult please as all work will involve using tools and can involve heavy lifting which may not be suitable for children. 
  • Please bring a drink and wear suitable clothing for undertaking outdoor work- waterproofs, long-sleeved tops/trousrer are recommended to protect from ticks. 
  • Note that work will involve manual removal of vegetation with slashers/rakes and some lifting. A degree of physical ability/fitness is required, although work is paced to accommodate all (where possible).
