Bay Archaeology Festival: Rediscovering the Bay’s Old Ways

A festival of archaeology, exploring, rediscovering and reimagining the secrets of the Bay’s past.

Join us as we celebrate Morecambe Bay's  extraordinary past, with a fortnight of special walks, talks, hands-on activities and family fun.

There will be something for everyone, as we delve into the history and archaeology of some of the Bay's most intriguing sites.

 The full programme will be available shortly, with details of how to book, but here is a taster of what you can expect...

Saturday 16 July, 11am – 3.30pm: Family Archaeology  Day, The Forum, Barrow-in-Furness; A day of family fun helping you get under the skin of the local area including trails, art, dig boxes, re-enactment and minecraft!

Saturday 16 July, 10.30am- 1pm: Bay Archaeology Festival Lecture Series, The Forum, Barrow-in-Furness

A day of talks and presentations including:

  • Between the wilderness and the world – the Cistercians and Furness Abbey (Andrew Davidson -Historic England)
  • Furness Abbey and its place in the historic landscape of Cumbria (Caron Newman)
  • Caves of the Bay (Dr. Hannah O’Regan - Nottingham University)
  • The Military History of Walney Island (Ben Edwards & Amy Walling - Manchester Metropolitan University)
  • Mapping Morecambe Bay – The Early Days (Bill Shannon)

 

Saturday 16 July, 2pm: Walk and talk: Reading the Historic Buildings of Barrow (Dan Elsworth - Greenlane Archaeology)

Sunday 17 July, 1pm: Walk and talk: Piel Island and Castle – a view from the past  (Rachel Newman)

Tuesday 19 July, 6pm: Walk and talk: Exploring Walney’s Military Sites ( Manchester Metropolitan University)

Thursday 21 July, 2pm: Walk and talk:  Birkrigg Stone Circle (Peter Wilde)

Saturday 23 July: Guided tours of Furness Abbey  (English Heritage)

Tuesday 26 July, 1pm: Walk and talk: The History of Jenny Brown’s Point, Silverdale  (Simon Williams)

Tuesday 26 & Wednesday 27 July: Military recording and geophysics training days with Durham University, Cockerham

Saturday 30 July 11 -3.30pm: Family Archaeology  Day, The Storey, Lancaster; A day of family fun helping you get under the skin of the local area including trails, art, dig boxes, re-enactment and minecraft!
