Writing The Flotsam and Jetsam of the Bay

New creative responses to Morecambe Bay

This collection of poems and prose came out of two creative writing workshops held at the Reading Room, Sunderland Point, in the winters of 2016 and 2017. Organised through our events programme funded by the Headlands to Headspace HLF Scheme, the aim was to encourage people to see the Bay through new eyes, discover Morecambe Bay, make new connections and respond creatively to the sounds and sights that make Morecambe Bay such a special place. Led by Lancaster-based writer Sarah Hymas, the participants were carefully guided through a range of exercises and activities that helped them put pen to paper. Sarah also encouraged everyone to get out and about around Sunderland Point and engage with the elements and local environment. Some of the writers featured here are experienced, others are complete beginners. We hope you enjoy reading their work.

Thanks go to Sarah Hymas for all her work preparing the workshops and for producing the pamphlet and the Sunderland Point Community Association for hosting the events in the Reading Room.
