What is BeachCare

Safety

 BeachCare is having a
short spring break.

A new BeachCare Officer will join us in mid May 2006.  Then we will arrange a programme of  beach cleans and publicise them to our BeachCare contacts and on this web page.

Successes

Since June 2003, 1722 people have taken part in 102 events, mainly, but not exclusively, beach cleans.  We have removed 12,723 kg of waste from 22 beaches and 2,979 items have been recycled.

BeachCare Groups – looking to form a Furness group

We have two established BeachCare groups that meet regularly at Arnside/Silverdale and Hest Bank/Morecambe.  We intend to form new BeachCare groups.  Our beach clean at Bardsea on 26 February 2006 (sponsored by GlaxoSmithKline), was supported by over 30 people, which was encouraging.  We hope to form a Furness BeachCare group this summer and would be pleased to hear from anyone who is interested in taking part.

135 Student Volunteers at Fleetwood – 21 February

135 students took part in this event on 21 February 2006 at Fleetwood as part of the National Student Volunteering Week.  We were pleased to welcome student volunteers from many different countries and Universities in Lancaster, Manchester, Liverpool, Bolton, Chester, Preston and Ambleside.  Our partners for this event were St. Martin’s College and Wyre District Council, both provided tremendous support.

860 Kg of litter was collected, surveyed, and removed.  A total of 4878 items were recorded on survey sheets, of these, at least 57% were plastic items.  There was a shocking 144 items of female sanitary and 41 balloons.

Volunteer Recognition Award

Claire Dixon (in the white hat) is one of our most dedicated volunteers. She has been very active in BeachCare and helps to run the recycling scheme.  In recognition of her outstanding contribution, the Partnership trustees awarded her with a certificate at the BeachCare training/social event on 17 January 2006.
