Morecambe Bay Partnership AGM & Conference 2003

This years AGM and 13th Conference was held in Poulton-le-Fylde on 23rd October 2003.

The day was extremely well attended.  Over half of the delegates were individual members of the Partnership and they were joined by representatives from a wide spread of organisations and industries around the Bay.

The Trustees reported on a comprehensive and successful programme of work over the last 12 months and the further consolidation of the Partnership as a charity.  They looked forward to progressing interpretation work over the coming year and were hopeful of establishing Morecambe Bay as a Regional Park.

Honorary Life Membership of the Partnership was awarded to Tom Hayhurst in recognition of his tremendous work with Arnside Sailing Club and HM Coastguard, and in supporting the development of the Morecambe Bay Partnership.  Conference Chairman, Captain John Green said "Toms commitment has been exemplary since his involvement in the early days when we were producing the first Strategy for the Partnership.  His passion for the sea and more particularly for the Bay has never faded."

The afternoon's presentations concentrated on:

  • River Wyre estuary code of practice, by Jo Beaman Countryside Officer, Wyre Borough Council
  • Morecambe Bay Partnership's BeachCare programme, by Dominic Charkin BeachCare Officer
  • Increased levels of commercial cockling in Morecambe Bay, by Dr Jim Andrews of North West and North Wales Sea Fisheries Committee.

Informative displays were provided by Blackpool & Fylde College, Lancaster City Council Tourism, Fleetwood Museum, Wyre Borough Council and the Morecambe Bay Partnership.

Wyreside Rangers hosted an optional visit for delegates to the Wyre Country Park to explain the work they do to safeguard the environment and support local wildlife.

One delegate said the day 'was a good opportunity to meet people from all around the Bay from different aspects'.  Even though the event lasted 4½ hours, the general feedback has been that people thought the day so worthwhile that they would like future events to be extended.

Copies of the presentations made at the 2003 conference are available, but we have to make a charge to cover our costs.  If you wish to see these, please send a cheque for £3 made out to Morecambe Bay Partnership together with your contact details.
